Unfortunately the world isn’t very well educated when it comes to understanding the validity of myths. A myth is based on fantasy and legend not fact, yet societies in countries like the US and UK actually believe stupid facts and myths just because they have become ingrained in society; people actually believe random and crazy things because it’s just ‘general knowledge’.
I’m not suggesting that people are unable comprehend or challenge myths – I’m simply saying that they don’t. Below are my top 5 myths about Australia, that the rest of the world genuinely believes and doesn’t challenge .
Stupid Myth One: Australia is a home to convicts.
This myth is actually based on some truth; during the late 18th and 19th centuries, large numbers of convicts were transported to various Australian penal colonies by the British government.
This IS NOT the case anymore. For some strange reason people, America and Britain in particular, still believe Australia is full of dangerous crooks.
Stupid Myth Two: Everyone is called Bruce.
I’m not sure how this started, though it is fair to say that most people in the western world genuinely believe 90% of the population in Australia are called Bruce.
This Monty Python clip really says it all:
Monty Python – Bruce
Stupid Myth Three: The army uses boomerangs as weapons.
Sadly they don’t. As effective as the boomerang would be (probably), they simply do not use them.
Stupid Myth Four: Life in Australia is exactly like it is in Neighbours.
At least this myth is based on a little more substance, but even still, I can’t believe the amount of people in the world who think that life is as sunny and as dramatic as it is on Ramsey Street.
Stupid Myth Five: Australia is totally flat.
Actually it isn’t. Australia has a highly varied land formation, with hundreds of notable mountains. See Wiki’s information on Australian mountains for more information.

Well, there you have it. Pretty stupid myths when you think about it, but so many take them as accurate and real information. I’ll be releasing more ‘stupid myths’ about other cultures and countries soon, so stay tuned!
